Why Air Conditioners Fail in Central Florida

What surprises many homeowners is that heat isn't always what stops a Central Florida air conditioner. Moisture and power surges cause plenty of failures too. On humid days, your system pulls gallons of moisture out of your indoor air, and it all drains through one narrow line where algae builds up fast.

Summer storms add a second problem, because surges can damage capacitors, contactors, and other electrical parts outside. These are the faults our HVAC technicians see most. That's why we test the system before quoting. First we find what failed, and then we give you the price to fix it.

  • 32°F

The point at which an indoor coil starved of air turns to ice, often because of one clogged filter.

  • 2020

The year R-22 production ended, so older systems that leak it cost more to recharge.

  • 78°F

The summer setting the U.S. Department of Energy suggests, which also eases the load on a tired system.

  • 3/4 inch

The usual width of the drain line that carries all that water out of your home.

6 Warnings Before Your Air Conditioner Quits

An air conditioner rarely quits without warning. First comes a hum from the side yard, a damp spot by the closet, or a bedroom that won't cool. Catch it then, and the fix usually stays small, since a fault left running for a hot week damages the parts around it.

  • It hums, but the fan won't spin.

Worn capacitor. This small metal cylinder stores the burst of power the fan and compressor motors need to start. Storm surges and nonstop summer cycling drain it until the unit hums, and nothing turns.

  • The vents blow air at room temperature.

Refrigerant leak. Refrigerant is what carries heat out of your house. When some of it leaks away, the system keeps running but moves less heat. Listen for a soft hiss near the copper lines.

  • There's water where water shouldn't be.

Clogged drain line. Once the drain line clogs, the water your system pulls from the air backs into the pan and spills over. Left alone, it stains ceilings and soaks closet floors.

  • One bedroom is always warmer than the rest.

Blocked airflow. A clogged filter, a dirty indoor coil, or a weak blower motor cuts the air reaching your vents. Rooms at the far end of the duct run feel the loss first.

  • The July bill jumps, but your habits didn't.

System strain. Dirt on the outdoor coil or a weakening part keeps the compressor going longer to reach the same temperature. Put this July's bill next to last July's. A big gap points to a fault.

  • You smell burning, or the breaker keeps tripping.

Electrical fault. Stop now. Shut cooling down at the thermostat and leave a tripping breaker alone. Overheated wiring or a failing motor is the usual cause, and running it risks the parts that still work.

Spotted one of these? Book a visit, and our HVAC technicians will trace the warning to the failed part and the reason behind it. Often, that means a simple repair. If a repair no longer makes sense for your system, you'll hear that plainly, with a replacement price beside it.

What Does Air Conditioner Repair Cost in Orlando?

Most air conditioner repairs we make cost a few hundred dollars, and the price depends on what failed, the labor involved, and your system's condition. We start with a diagnostic visit, so your estimate comes from a tested answer, not a guess. Smaller repairs, like a worn capacitor, burnt contactor, or clogged drain line, stay at the low end, while a compressor or indoor coil can reach about $4,000. We text or email the estimate, and the work waits for your approval. On an older unit facing a major repair, we'll price replacement too, so you can compare both.

When a Repair Still Makes Sense

We'll Tell You When the Smaller Bill Wins

You might not expect this from an HVAC company, but we'd rather fix what you have. If a repair keeps your air conditioner cooling well, that's our recommendation. When replacement is the better value, the table below shows why, and the choice stays yours.

Why Homeowners From Oviedo to Clermont Call Us

What You Get at Every Repair Visit

  • A Decade of Field Work Behind Every Diagnosis

A new part alone won't hold if a deeper fault ruined the old one, because that fault will ruin the new one too. Our HVAC technicians bring more than ten years of experience in installs, service calls, and commercial work. So they test the wiring, airflow, and refrigerant around a failed part before replacing it.

  • EPA 608 Certified, So Leaks Get Sealed

A top-off without a leak repair sends new refrigerant out the same hole, and you pay for it twice. Federal rules allow only EPA 608-certified technicians to handle refrigerant. Ours hold that certification, so we find the leak and seal it before a single pound goes in.

  • A 90-Day Warranty on Every Repair

What if the same problem comes back next month? Every repair we make carries a 90-day warranty on the work, so one call to our office brings us back to check it. Keep your invoice handy, since it shows the repair date.

From a Warm House to a Working System

Here's what happens between your first call and cool air at the vents.

  1. 1. Tell us what the system is doing

Call or book online and describe the problem, whether it's warm air, water, a new noise, or a tripped breaker. We'll ask its rough age, then set an arrival window, Monday through Saturday.

  2. 2. We test before we touch

Our technician checks the electrical parts, refrigerant pressures, airflow, and drain line. Once we find the root cause, we show you where it is and why it failed.

  3. 3. You see the price and decide

You get the repair price in plain words, plus replacement numbers if they make more sense. Nothing gets fixed until you say yes.

  4. 4. Fixed, tested and cooling

Once you approve, we make the repair and run a full cooling cycle. Then we measure the air at a supply vent, so you can feel cold air before we pack up.

An Arrival Window You Can Plan Around

When the house won't cool, waiting is the hard part. So when you call, our office asks what the system is doing and how old it is. Then you get a set arrival window, and repair visits usually land within the same week you reach us.

When Can You Come Out?

Phones open at 7:30 a.m., six days a week. They stay on until 5:30 p.m. through Friday, and Saturday calls are taken until 2 p.m. Call early in the day, and you'll have more open times to choose from that week.

Anything to Check First?

Make sure the thermostat is set to cool and a few degrees below room temperature. Then check the breaker and the air filter, since a clogged filter can block most of the airflow.

Air Conditioner Repair Questions People Ask

Monday to Friday: 7:30 am–5:30 pmSaturday: 7:30 am–2 pmSunday: Closed

Does homeowners insurance cover air conditioner repair?

Usually not. Policies generally exclude parts that wear out with age, like a capacitor or compressor. Many policies do cover sudden damage, such as a lightning strike or a fallen tree limb, so read your policy and report storm damage quickly.

Why is my thermostat screen blank?

Dead batteries are the most common cause. If fresh batteries don't help, check the breaker. On many systems, a safety switch also cuts power when the drain line backs up, which can leave the screen dark until the clog is cleared.

How long does an air conditioner repair take?

Many common repairs, like replacing a capacitor or contactor, or clearing a drain line, take an hour or two once the fault is found. Leak repairs and compressor work can take longer, especially when a part has to be ordered.

Why is my air conditioner making a grinding or squealing noise?

Grinding often points to worn motor bearings, and a high squeal can mean a failing blower or fan motor. Rattling usually comes from a loose panel or debris inside the outdoor unit. Shut the system off if the noise is loud or new.

Is it bad to keep running an air conditioner that isn't cooling?

Yes. A system that runs without cooling is often low on refrigerant or short on airflow, and both make the compressor run hot. Keep it going, and a small repair can turn into a compressor replacement.
